Incense boat, German, 16th cent

The Anthonian Museum, reopened in 1995, offers a unique look at the artistic treasures produced over the centuries for the Basilica and for the Venerable Ark of St. Anthony: paintings, sculptures, plaster figures, sacred vestments, tapestries, jewellery, which until recently were not available for public viewing.

Authentic works of art are exhibited: the frescoed lunette by Mantegna for the Basilica's doorway, the wooden marquetry of the fifteenth century, the precious incense boat of gold by sixteenth century German goldsmiths, altar pieces by Tiepolo and Piazzetta, a rare liturgical vestment woven in Lyon in the eighteenth century.

The Basilica of St. Anthony is an extraordinary treasure chest of faith and art. In this historical setting of medieval architecture, adjacent to the Botanical Gardens, you can trace a path which links the frescoed chapel of Altichiero e Giusto de' Menabuoi to Donatello's bronzes, the young Titian's frescoes in the School of the Saint to the Baroque settings of the sculptor Filippo Parodi.
